When commissioned by the Turner Contemporary to contribute a project to the RELAY programme, artist and film-maker John Smith was asked “What do you want to film?”. He answered, “Well, what about the sea?”.

He spent three months of recording the varying light on the Margate’s seascape; in Horizon he distills that into an eighteen minute composition of colour and brightness. The result is Horizon (Five Pounds a Belgian)/
.

The film was made by Mark Castro and Mark Philo, students at Canterbury Christ Church University.
