Oxford art graduate Dom Callaghan is this year’s recipient of the Platform 2013 Graduate Award for his work, You are necessary here, 2013 which includes paintings, handmade objects and clothing.

The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art graduate was presented with his award – a bursary of £2,500 and a 12-month programme of bespoke professional development – by multimedia artist Adam Chodzko at a special event held at Turner Contemporary in Margate on Thursday (7 November). Callaghan faced stiff competition from seven of the shortlisted arts graduates (see Special Feature Platform 2013) but his works, which are are characterised by their vibrant palette, an exploration of pattern and the use of traditional, everyday materials, won the judges over.

Modern Art Oxford Director, Paul Hobson commented: “New artistic talent is the lifeblood of organisations like Modern At Oxford. This fantastic initiative provides vital professional development and support to a selection of emerging artists of promise within the South East region by offering mentoring and the unique experience of realising a show in a public institution of international standing at a formative stage of their fledgling career. We offer our sincere congratulations to all artists selected for consideration and to Dom Callaghan for being given this award and the opportunity it presents.”

The Platform Graduate Award was devised in 2012 in collaboration with the Contemporary Visual Arts Network South East (CVAN), and is a partnership between four galleries: Aspex Gallery, MK Gallery, Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary. Each organisation has selected graduates from their local area to participate in this series of exhibitions with one of Modern Art Oxford’s shortlisted artists scooping the award.
