Photoworks has appointed Celia Davies as its new Director. Davies has been Acting Director at Photoworks since February 2013 and was previously Head of Programmes (2011) following its merger with the Brighton Photo Biennial where she developed the artistic strategy of the organisation.

Davies said: “I am committed to Photoworks’ mission as a leading and relevant voice in photography today. New ideas inform the approach to our work and I welcome the possibilities of this role as we move forward; ensuring Photoworks continues to flourish and realises new areas of ambition. At Photoworks we believe photography is a powerful tool in shaping our view of the world and Photoworks is an important platform to promote engagement with photography’s place in contemporary culture. Collaboration is essential, the widest distribution of our work is our aim and how photography is consumed is our opportunity.”

Davies was Head of Projects at Photoworks (2008-11) and previously Head of Exhibitions at De La Warr Pavilion (2002-8). She is currently Guest Curator and Visual Arts Advisor for HOUSE Festival and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Blast Theory. Over the past fifteen years, Davies has conceived and delivered numerous cultural projects in gallery, festival and outdoor contexts.

Photoworks curates, commissions and publishes new work and writing on photography and produces exhibitions, books, participation and learning projects and events including the Brighton Photo Biennial. Photoworks is a National Portfolio Organisation funded by Arts Council England.
