The winner of the Platform Award 2012 for graduates, Joella Wheatley, was recently chosen for inclusion in a fascinating show of 10 emerging artists at Islington Arts Factory (IAF).

Entitled Metamorphose, the group exhibition (24 May-14 June) brought together work by a selection of Fine Art graduates from UK colleges, including the Royal College of Art and South East’s University of the Creative Arts (Farnham).

Devised and curated by IAF’s Director of Art Eleanor Pearce, the Metamorphose exhibition has been offering opportunities to new graduates since 2007. Selected artists propose work that responds to the context of the venue, a former gothic church that could be twinned with Fabrica, Brighton.  For Metamorphose, Joella made new work as well as showing a number of the exquisite paintings which secured her the Platform Award 2012.

With degree shows currently opening everywhere – graduate initiatives like Platform and Metamorphose provide essential exposure and support at a critical point in an artists’ career. Graduates selected to have a Platform show gain valuable experience and expertise from working with professional staff in one of a number of key galleries in the South East, all with national and international profiles. Thanks to a significant grant from The Foyle Foundation, the Metamorphose project has developed to include a new residency opportunity and a solo exhibition for one of the exhibiting artists. The winner will be announced later this month.
