Platform is going from strength to strength, expanding each year with more universities and colleges seeing the value of getting involved. As a successful model of collaboration, it brings together the best of the region’s higher education and cultural institutions for the benefit of developing artistic talent.

Sophie Dixon, from the University of Kent, was chosen out of five shortlisted graduate artists, each one nominated from one of the five participating South East visual arts organisations. As this year’s award winner for her works And Only Fine Threads Hold Us To Each Moment and Wünschendorf, 2014, Sophie will receive a £2500 bursary from Platform and a year of mentoring from an experienced art professional.

Sophie’s work And Only Fine Threads Hold Us To Each Moment, consists of a 50-page book, prints and written text about Srbská, formerly Wünschendorf, a small village on the Czech Republic’s modern-day border with Poland. The artist’s video installation Wünschendorf, explores the irreversible changes that the Second World War wrought on the lives of millions, a period of loss and displacement which continues to influence the world in which we live today. These works were exhibited at Turner Contemporary alongside art work by nine other Kent graduate artists from 17 September until 2 November 2014 as part of this year’s Platform Graduate Award.
