Designed by Stirling Prizewinner David Chipperfield, the Turner Contemporary opened its doors in April 2011, transforming the arts offer in Kent with a series of programmes that the gallery says are “inspired by JMW Turner’s sense of enquiry.”

Situated on Margate’s seafront, on the same site where Turner stayed when visiting the town, Turner Contemporary is the largest exhibition space in the South East, outside of London and specialises in major exhibitions by contemporary artists.
